Dick Advocaat believes exit-bound Emanuele Giaccherini is ill-suited to the Premier League, even if he goes on to thrive on the Continent.

Advocaat has confirmed that Giaccherini is expected to leave Sunderland before the end of the transfer window after the Italian international didn’t even get a place on the bench for last weekend’s defeat to Norwich.

My personal view is that Giaccherini is not a player for England

Giaccherini’s agent has been in discussions with Serie A side Bologna over a return to his native Italy, although Sunderland will demand either a hefty loan fee or a transfer in excess of £4million for the 30-year-old.

Since arriving at the Stadium of Light from Juventus for £6.5million two years ago, Giaccherini - one of the top earners at the club - has only made a sporadic impact and saw injuries limit his contribution last season.

And Sunderland boss Advocaat believes that is down to Giaccherini’s ability being better-suited to the slower paced football abroad, than in the high-octane nature of the Premier League.

Advocaat said: “I understand the interest from Italy.

“My personal view is that Giaccherini is not a player for England.

“He is a great talent, a good touch, good passing, but you don’t get the time to do that in England.

“But for Italy and Spain, he’ll be a great player. But not for us.”

Giaccherini is not the only Sunderland player to be linked with an exit this week, with speculation surrounding Jermain Defoe’s future on Wearside.

Defoe has publicly stressed that he is happy at the club and rubbished suggestions that he had demanded to leave.

However, Advocaat says that if there are players in his squad who are not content, then it is better if they find new homes.

“Anyone who comes to me and asks to go, can go,” he added.
