But the Black Cats still needed Thomas Sorensen’s save from Alan Shearer’s late penalty to seal the win.
Gary Speed had given Bobby Robson’s men a fourth minute lead but Sunderland equalised through Don Hutchison after 68 minutes.
Quinn then headed home a Michael Gray cross.
