DANNY Welbeck insists he can slip back into top gear during the campaign’s final exchanges after his enforced mid-season break.

Today’s trip to Birmingham City was set to be Welbeck’s fourth outing since returning from a two-month absence through injury.

The on-loan Manchester United striker is yet to find the net since his return or find the form which saw him become Sunderland’s most dangerous frontman during the Autumn.

But with fellow forward Fraizer Campbell ruled out for the remainder of the season, Welbeck is confident he can rediscover the spark which saw him score six times in eight games between November and January.

Welbeck said: “I’m going to put my all into these last few games. Training has gone well, I’ve trained every day since I come back and I’m ready to play the matches.

“It was devastating to get injured back in January. But I looked at the positive side of it and got myself back as soon as possible.”

England striker Welbeck had been struggling with a knee injury when he pulled his hamstring during Sunderland’s January win at Aston Villa.

While undergoing treatment on his hamstring, Welbeck further aggravated the knee problem and returned to Old Trafford during his rehabilitation.

“I had some swelling with my knee just before the Villa game,” said the 20-year-old. “But then it went down and I was alright to play. Then the hamstring set it off again.

“Maybe I wasn’t running correctly in the Villa game and it caused the hamstring.”

Each of Sunderland’s games over the run-in are against the Premier Division’s lesser lights.

And despite Sunderland desperate run of form since the turn of the year, Welbeck insists the players remain confident that they can pick up points from those games.

The England striker added: “There’s no easy games in the Premier League.

“But hopefully we can get as many points as possible now until the end of the season. We’ve still got a good team spirit around the place.”
