The knee injury at the centre of the row between Sunderland and Inter Milan, means Ricky Alvarez is unlikely to play much this side of Christmas.
In that respect, there is no rush for FIFA to make a decision over the Argentine international’s future.
But despite Alvarez’s struggles in his season-long loan at Sunderland, you have to feel some sympathy for the 27-year-old during this continued spat.
On a human level, this is a guy who just wants to know who his employers are.
We know the arguments. Inter believe Sunderland are duty-bound to sign Alvarez, whereas the Black Cats are adamant that the Serie A outfit breached the terms of contract in their dallying over agreeing for the midfielder to undergo knee surgery.
But the predictable faffing continues from FIFA, who insists there is “no timescale” on when Alvarez’s case will be resolved.
Alvarez may have to spend several more months twiddling his thumbs before he knows where he is working.
