SATURDAY’S encounter with Chelsea marks the start of a daunting week for Sunderland, with Gus Poyet’s men hosting reigning champions Manchester City on Wednesday before travelling to Liverpool the following weekend.

But after Sunderland enjoyed victories over City, Chelsea and Manchester United last season, midfielder Liam Bridcutt says the Black Cats shouldn’t be daunted by the demands of the fixture list.

“We are capable of getting points from these games – we proved that last season,” said the former Brighton man.

“And we are a better team this season than last, without a doubt.

“We seem to always do better against the top teams.

“Obviously, you have to be bang on in these games because a slip-up can cost you, but we’re looking forward to the next three.

“These are the matches that make you want to play in the Premier League.”
