Paddy McNair: Steady stuff in a 4-4-2 before coming off 20 minutes from time. 6Didier Ndong: Some early promise before fading, had a powerful shot saved in second half. 6

Steven Pienaar: A fair shift in centre midfield until his second booking and subsequent red card. Looked harsh. 6

Duncan Watmore: Full of life wide on right, like Jones heavily involved going forward. Had goal disallowed and did good work in lead up to penalty. 7

Jermain Defoe: Led from front as always, had an assist for Anichebe's goal. Put penalty away emphatically. 7

Victor Anichebe: Would you Adam'n'Eve it? Without a goal since May '15, he lashes one in with left foot AND wins penalty, what a first start. Brilliant in closing stages as Sunderland held out. 8
