Sunderland have never progressed in the FA Cup after being drawn away to Arsenal.

The Black Cats travel to the Emirates on Saturday looking to upset the form book ... and history.

The last time Sunderland visited Arsenal in the FA Cup was in January 1997 - it was at Highbury and they earned a 1-1 draw.

John Hartson opened the scoring for the Gunners 10 minutes in, but after another 10 minutes Michael Gray scored the equaliser.

Here’s how the teams lined up:

Arsenal: Lukic, Parlour, Winterburn, Keown, Bould, Adams, Morrow (Shaw 70), Vieira, Hartson, Bergkamp, Merson.

Sunderland: Perez, Hall, Kubicki, Bracewell, Ord, Melville, Gray, Agnew (Williams 53), Mullin (Russell 59), Bridges (Aiston 76), Kelly.

Sunderland’s next game was a league clash against Arsenal at Roker Park, and Peter Reid’s men won the points couresty of a Tony Adams own goal.

The cup replay brought an end to a sequence of three successive games between the sides, with the North Londoners winning on Wearside this time, thanks to goals from Dennis Bergkamp and Stephen Hughes.

Sunderland’s previous visit to Arsenal in the FA Cup brought a 2-1 defeat in 1991.

Goals from Alan Smith and Anders Limpar had the hosts – managed by George Graham - on top before an own goal from David O’Leary gave Denis Smith’s Sunderland some hope 15 minutes from time.

Here’s how the teams lined up:

Arsenal: Seamn, Dixon, Winterburn, Thomas, Bould, Linighan, Groves, Davis, Smith, Merson, Limpar (O’Leary 68).

Sunderland: Norman, Kay, Hardyman, Bracewell, Bennett, Ball, Pascoe, Owers, Hawke (Brady 66), Rush, Armstrong.

The only other time Sunderland were drawn to visit Arsenal in the FA Cup was way back in 1906, with the likes of George Holley and Arthur Bridgett in Sunderland colours at a game played at the Manor Ground. Woolwich Arsenal won the game 5-0.

Of course, Sunderland HAVE knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup away from Wearside.

That game at the neutral semi-final venue of Hillsborough came in 1973 when goals from Vic Halom and Billy Hughes beat the Gunners 2-1.

That prevented the Gunners reaching a third successive final ... a good omen maybe?
