SUNDERLAND have pocketed more than £8million in prize money after finishing in 14th spot in the Premier League table.

The Black Cats will receive £8.4m for their efforts this season after Hull, West Brom and Aston Villa all spurned the opportunity to leapfrog Sunderland, who succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to Swansea on the final day today.

Gus Poyet’s side could have pocketed an extra £2.4m if they had beaten the Swans and finished in 12th spot.

But ending the campaign in 14th is still worth almost double the prize money than Sunderland would have received if they had finished fourth bottom.
