Northern League: Cestrians denied by late Celtic leveller in bottom-of-the-table scrap

Chester-le-Street were denied a welcome Second Division victory by a late equaliser from fellow strugglers West Allotment Celtic on Saturday.

The Cestrians went ahead when Joshua King fired home in the second half, but they allowed Bruno Mendes-Correia to equalise nine minutes from time. The pair are level on 13 points, three above bottom club Alnwick Town, who lost 3-1 to Darlington RA in another crunch battle at the bottom.

Goals from James Wilson, Mark Sims and Callum Bennett did the trick for RA, with Lewis Coyle replying.

Easington Colliery had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Billingham Town, fighting back for their point.

Busy striker Ashley Lavan gave Town a 17th-minute lead, however, four minutes before half-time, Jay Redman deservedly levelled matters.

Durham City slipped to 16th place after they were crushed 5-0 at eighth-placed neighbours Esh Winning.

Nicky Marley and Connor Halpin both scored twice for rampant Esh, with Dagan Taylor adding the fifth.

Crook Town, under the new management of Chris Lax, succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at Jarrow, who had Nick Quinn and Josh Allan on target either side of the break.

Willington lost 1-0 at home to fourth-placed Heaton Stannington, ending their good home run.

The all-important goal came from Dan Robinson in the 70th minute, with a cheeky back-heel.

Brandon United lost 3-2 at home to Blyth, despite taking the lead twice.

Kyle Wren scored early on for United, but Gary Day equalised just before the break.

Aaron Jackson made it 2-1 to Brandon when he slotted home after 83 minutes, but jLiam Gillesphey headed home to make it 2-2 two minutes later.

In the last minute, Damien Stevens rifled into the top corner to clinch a dramatic victory for Blyth.

Hebburn Town went top of the league on goal difference, but they left it very late following a 1-1 draw at home to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion.

Albion went ahead on the hour mark when Rhys Harbottle fired home, but, with just seconds left, Jason Blackburn scored the equaliser to snatch a draw for Scott Oliver’s men.
