NEWCASTLE United’s season got off to a dismal start as they crashed 4-0 at Manchester City.
They also had Steven Taylor sent off for a stupid challenge on David Silva just before half-time.
Silva took just six minutes to open City’s account with a close-range header.
Sergio Aguero added another before half-time, with Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri also on target after the interval. Edin Dzeko was desperately unlucky not to open his account for the season too, with Newcastle fortunate to escape a heavier beating.
It was not entirely a trouble-free night for new City boss Manuel Pellegrini as he lost skipper Vincent Kompany to a groin injury.
Newcastle were without Yohan Cabaye, the subject of a £10m bid from Arsenal earlier today.
Magpies manager Alan Pardew will not have been happy with that news coming out today – and he should not be happy with Taylor, who deliberately caught Aguero round the side of his head with a swing of his arm, right in front of referee Andre Marriner.
It was an obvious straight red card and left the visitors with no chance of salvaging anything from a sorry evening.
