NEWCASTLE United have made the shock appointment of Joe Kinnear as their new director of football.
Kinnear returns to Tyneside four years after his last ill-fated spell at the club.
The 66-year-old has been brought in by owner Mike Ashley to work with manager Alan Pardew.
Kinnear said: “It’s been an ongoing situation with Mike Ashley for three weeks and once we clarified what my role would be – in charge of transfers and to help out Alan Pardew – I thought it’s a very interesting role.
“I don’t believe I could be at a better role at a better club.
“I believe I’m a very good judge of players, a good tactician, I’ve worked with the best – I intend to make Newcastle far better than they are now.”
Ashley controversially appointed the ex-Wimbledon man in as interim manager in 2008 after Kevin Keegan left the club.
Kinnear’s colourful time in charge ended in February, 2009, when he needed a triple heart bypass operation
