DANNY Guthrie will leave Newcastle United this summer.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew had been keen to keep Guthrie at the Sports Direct Arena, and there were discussions about a new contract in the latter part of last season.

However, there is no longer a deal on the table for 25-year-old, who will now leave for the regular first-team football he craves.

Last season, Guthrie found his opportunities limited by the form of first-choice central midfield pair Yohan Cabaye and Cheik Tiote.

However, he impressed when called upon, though, tellingly, he wasn’t involved in the last few weeks of the season, despite being fit.

His last appearance was in the 2-0 home win over his former club Liverpool in early April.

Aston Villa were keen on Guthrie before Alex McLeish’s dismissal, while West Bromwich Albion have also been linked with the Shrewsbury-born player, signed by Kevin Keegan in the summer of 2008.

Guthrie made 104 appearances – and scored nine goals – in his four years at Newcastle, but he frequently found himself on the bench.
