Steve McClaren says Newcastle must “fight and scrap” their way out of the drop zone.

McClaren’s side are 18th in the division ahead of Sunday’s game at Tottenham, which is followed by a crucial home game against basement club Aston Villa.

The challenge for the Tynesiders is to finally put a run of results together. Asked how he felt when he looked at the table, head coach McClaren said: “Not good. We are where we are and we have to fight and scrap to get out of it and climb the league.

“We’re not halfway through yet. We keep getting results that buoy us, but we’re not kicking on from that.

“We need to do that to show we can climb the league. We’re not out of the woods yet. It’s going to be very competitive down there.

“We’re thinking of how to get out of it and how to produce more consistent performances.”

Meanwhile, McClaren says he has not yet sat down with the rest of Newcastle’s board to discuss next month’s transfer window.

There is a pressing need for new signings given the Magpies’ predicament, but McClaren would only say: “Things are going on in the background, and we have touched upon things, but our sole focus for the last four to six weeks has been about results, one game at a time.”
