CARDIFF City failed in a deadline day bid to land Newcastle United striker Papiss Demba Cisse on loan.
Turkish club Trabzonspor, linked with a £7m offer, are also understood to have made contact over a permanent move.
But the transfer window closed with Cisse – rated as “doubtful” for this afternoon’s Tyne-Wear derby because of a back problem – still a United player.
Newcastle were not looking to sell the 28-year-old, who has struggled for form over the past 18 months after making a blistering start to his career on Tyneside after a £9m move from Freiburg two years ago.
Cisse’s goals helped propel the club to a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League.
However, the Senegal international still faces an uncertain future at St James’s Park, and he could now leave in the summer.
Cisse is frustrated at a lack of first-team football, though with Loic Remy suspended for three games, there is an opportunity for him to re-establish himself in Newcastle’s attack.
