SYLVAIN Marveaux’s Newcastle United career is back up and running.

That’s the verdict of Magpies manager Alan Pardew, who felt Marveaux was his best player in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Braga.

Marveaux won a penalty in the second of Newcastle’s two Torneo Guadiana matches on Portugal’s Algarve.

The 26-year-old, who has been plauged by groin problems over the past two years, missed the bulk of last season through injury.

And Pardew is looking forward to having him again available in the Premier League, which kicks off in just under three weeks’ time.

“Marveaux was the pick of the bunch,” Pardew said. “There were moments of class that he produced on the pitch.”

Goals from Demba Ba – who netted the rebound after his penalty was saved by goalkeeper Beto – and Ryan Taylor saw captain Fabricio Coloccini lift the Torneo Guadiana trophy.

Pardew felt there were many positives to take from the club’s involvement in the event.

“Demba and (Papiss Demba) Cisse are looking sharp,” he added. “Colo was Colo. Everybody has played their role in the two games.”

Another positive in the Braga game was the performance of Sammy Ameobi, handed a start on the right wing.

The 20-year-old had a goal disallowed for offside, and troubled Braga all game.

Pardew said: “Sammy (Ameobi) made some great runs. I do think he is going to have a much bigger season for us if he can stay fit.

“We all know he’s got talent, he’s just got to bring it all together. For long periods he did that.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle are hopeful of agreeing a deal for Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy by the middle of the week.

Up to now, the sticking point has been the fee for the 27-year-old.

Lille are understood to be holding out for around £8million for the right-back, and Newcastle’s initial bid fell well short of that.

However, work is ongoing on a deal to bring the France international, a close friend of Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, to Tyneside.
