KEVIN Nolan blasted the “schoolboy errors” which cost Newcastle United at Anfield.
The club’s captain left the field after yesterday’s 3-0 defeat frustrated Newcastle had gifted Liverpool two of their goals.
And Nolan has challenged his team-mates to put the mistakes behind them when Birmingham City visit St James’s Park on Saturday.
Newcastle went behind to an early deflected goal from Maxi Rodriguez.
But they fought back without troubling home goalkeeper Pepe Reina and their fate was all but sealed when Mike Williamson conceded a disputed penalty as the hour-mark approached.
The spot-kick was converted by Dirk Kuyt, who was also involved in the move for Liverpool’s third, scored all too easily by Luis Suarez.
And boyhood Liverpool fan Nolan conceded while United had spells of possession, they could have asked more questions of Kenny Dalglish’s side, having had just one shot on target.
“It’s disappointing, really,” Nolan said. “We’ve probably given a half-account of ourselves.
“We were comfortable, but it was silly mistakes again. I know we talk about them all the time, but schoolboy errors have cost us again. It’s really disappointing on our behalf.
“We just weren’t good enough. The be-all and end-all is that we should be having a better go and not giving away sloppy goals.
“When we look back, we’re going to be disappointed.
“At 0-1, we were in the game and it was an error which gave them a penalty
“You get a bit disheartened. At Anfield it is always a bit difficult and then they got the third.
“The third goal just summed it up. We’ve just got to take it on the chin and Birmingham’s a massive game for us to get back amongst the top 10.
“I felt quite confident we could come away with something, but it wasn’t to be.
“We’ve just got to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and look forward to a very challenging week.
“We’ve got to get ourselves up for the Birmingham game. It’s a massive one for us. We’ve got to try and get as many points as we can on the board.
“That’s the main thing. We’ve got to really look forward to the weekend.”
The Reds, who have scored 14 in their last three home matches, moved above Tottenham into fifth place, the final European qualifying place.
