MEHDI Abeid has joined Newcastle United’s injury list – after suffering a toe problem on international duty.

The midfielder was in line to make his senior Algeria debut against Ethiopia in a African Cup of Nations Cup qualifier yesterday.

But Abeid suffered the injury – reportedly a broken toe – in training on the eve of the game, and was pictured on crutches.

The 22-year-old – who has started Newcastle’s last three games in place of the injured Cheik Tiote – now faces several weeks on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, striker Papiss Demba Cisse – who has been troubled by a knee injury in recent weeks – was an unused substitute for Senegal, who beat Egypt 1-0 in Cairo to qualify for the tournament.

That means Cisse will away in January, and potentially early February, when the African Cup of Nations is staged in Equatorial Guinea.

Abeid’s Algeria have also qualified, while Tiote’s Ivory Coast beat Sierra Leone 5-1 to put one foot in the finals.
