Newcastle United hope to complete the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum today – with Aleksander Mitrovic set to follow him to St James’s Park.
Wijnaldum was due on Tyneside this afternoon after PSV Eindhoven accepted a £14.5million bid.
The 24-year-old is understood to be keen to join United and become the first signing of the Steve McClaren era at the club.
PSV technical director confirmed earlier today that Wijnaldum – who captained PSV to the Eredivisie title last season – had left the club’s base at Evian-les-Bains, France, to travel to Newcastle to discuss terms.
And Anderlecht striker Mitrovic, 20, is also on standby to travel to Tyneside.
United are in advanced discussions with his club, and the deal could be completed over the next 24 hours.
The process is going and believe you me there is a massive willingness from the club to spend, but not spend foolishly or do anything foolishly.Steve McClaren
Mitrovic, reportedly offered a five-year contract, will cost around £13million.
Head coach McClaren yesterday said that Newcastle, yet to sign a player this summer, were “close” to a transfer breakthrough.
He said: “The process is going and believe you me there is a massive willingness from the club to spend, but not spend foolishly or do anything foolishly, but especially spend foolishly.”
McClaren’s side take on Gateshead at the International Stadium tonight.
United will head across the Atlantic on Sunday for a three-game tour of the USA.
