NEWCASTLE United have bid for Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, according to reports in France, writes Miles Starforth.
The Magpies have reportedly tabled a £7m offer for the 23-year-old, who has previously been the subject of interest from Arsenal.
Yanga-Mbiwa, capped three times by France, is an international colleague of Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye and Mathieu Debuchy.
The Tynesiders were already looking for a centre-half before captain Fabricio Coloccini told the club he wanted to leave in this month’s transfer window.
Coloccini is set for talks about his future with the Newcastle hierarchy on Monday.
The 30-year-old is keen to return to his native Argentina, where he is wanted by San Lorenzo.
