JOEY Barton today insisted Andy Carroll’s controversial sale won’t stop him committing his long-term future to Newcastle United.
The midfielder has been hugely influential this season. And there had been fears among fans the sale of Carroll to Liverpool last week would see the 28-year-old put contract talks on hold, with his present deal running out in 18 months.
While Barton was disappointed to see Carroll leave St James’s Park, Barton says his “affection” for Newcastle, and his determination to repay the fans’ faith in him, will see him sign over the coming days.
“I’ve spoken to the club, and in principle agreed a deal – that’s where we’re at,” Barton said. “Nothing’s changed on my point of view.
“Obviously, there’s the Andy saga, and it would make anyone think ‘is the club going in the right direction, and are they going to reinvest that kind of money?’.
“I think it’ll be a massive boost for everyone if I sign.”
