Jamaal Lascelles says every second counts for him in his first pre-season at Newcastle United.

The defender signed for the club a year ago in a double deal with goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

“Now I finally have I’m really pleased. Every second that I play, I enjoy. The way we played, hopefully we can take that forward. Hopefully, we can take that into the season.”

But the pair were loaned back to Nottingham Forest for a season.

And Lascelles – who has played in all of Newcastle’s pre-season friendlies so far – is keen to make an impression on new head coach Steve McClaren, who he briefly worked with at the City Ground.

The 21-year-old was set to feature again against Portland Timbers at Providence Park, Oregon, in the early hours of this morning.

Lascelles is determined to make the most of every minute he gets on the field between now and the start of the season.

“I enjoy every minute,” said Lascelles. “I’ve waited long enough to get the shirt on.

“Now I finally have I’m really pleased. Every second that I play, I enjoy. The way we played, hopefully we can take that forward. Hopefully, we can take that into the season.”

Captain Fabricio Coloccini – who has not featured yet because of an Achilles problem – was not involved against the Timbers because of the artificial surface at 21,000-seat Providence Park.

Coloccini will now have to catch up his fitness when he returns to England for the club’s remaining three warm-up games against Sheffield United, York City and Borussia Monchengladbach.

However, Steven Taylor, Coloccini’s defensive colleague, continued his comeback against the Major League Soccer side.
