THE football community has shown their support for Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez after he was given the all-clear from cancer.

Former teammates Joey Barton and Jose Enrique and Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker were among the first to pass on their best wishes via Twitter.

The 31-year-old revealed in September that he was having treatment following the diagnosis of testicular cancer in his native Argentina.

Gutierrez took to Twitter last night to announce, in Spanish: “Today I was given a medical discharge.

“Thank you very much to all who accompanied me at this time, especially my family, my parents, brothers, godmother, friends and @alemaglietti”

In response, Barton tweeted from his ‏@Joey7Barton account: “Great news this morning about @elgalgojonas Very happy for you and your family my friend. #allclear #toonarmy”

Former England international Lineker tweeted: “Hugely encouraging news that Jonas Gutiérrez is in remission from testicular cancer. Wish him well.”

Meanwhile, former Newcastle teammate Jose Enrique, who now plays for Liverpool, tweeted: “Gutierrez discharged from hospital after beating testicular cancer so happy for you my friend. You are the king.”

Gutierrez has also retweeted congratulatory messages from followers, while Newcastle also tweeted their congratulations.

The club posted: “Everyone at #NUFC is delighted to share the news that @elgalgojonas has been discharged from hospital in Argentina #UnitedWithJonas’.”

Gutierrez joined Newcastle from Real Mallorca in July 2008 and became a fans’ favourite when he played a starring role in helping the club win the Championship in his second season in the north-east.

However, he was largely unused by manager Alan Pardew last season, and was allowed to join Norwich on loan for the second half of the campaign, where he made his last league appearance in the Canaries’ 1-0 defeat to West Brom in April.
