NEWCASTLE winger Gabriel Obertan will be sidelined until the New Year at the earliest, according to Alan Pardew.

The winger tore a thigh muscle in last weekend’s 1-0 home win over Liverpool.

After starting the season on the fringes, Obertan had kick-started the Tynesiders’ four-game winning run with a goal against Leicester City last month.

But the 25-year-old is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, possibly as long as four months.

“He’s torn the muscle in his thigh and will be out for some time,” said Pardew.

“What that will be? No idea, but certainly not in the short term.

“He has been terrific for us. We had got him in a great place. He was playing with such confidence and thrust that it took the team forward.”

Asked if he would be out until March, Pardew added: “We have to wait and see.

“He’s had an operation and it’s six to eight weeks minimum.

“We send our best regards from all the players and the staff here to him, and the fans.”
