NEWCASTLE United star Siem de Jong could be back in action for Real Sociedad’s visit to St James’s Park on Sunday.
The summer signing was not involved in the weekend’s Schalke 04 Cup games because of a calf problem.
And de Jong, signed from Ajax in June, will not feature at Huddersfield Town tomorrow night.
But Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is hope that the 25-year-old – who has scored two goals so far this pre-season – will be fit for the Magpies’ final friendly ahead of the big Premier League kuck-off against Manchester City.
“The injury to Siem de Jong is not big, so he could feature on Sunday,” said Pardew.
Pardew reported no fresh injury problems from the Tynesiders’ two Schalke 04 Cup games, though midfielder Cheik Tiote played no part in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Malaga or the 3-1 success against the host club yesterday.
“We came through unscathed,” added Pardew, who had opted to leave de Jong behind on Tyneside for treatment. “We’ve got no injuries, which we’re really pleased about.”
Newcastle beat Schalke 3-1 thanks to goals from Emmanuel Riviere, Rolando Aarons and Remy Cabella.
The tournament was won by Malaga, who comfortably won both their games.
“It was a high-calibre tournament, and the best team won,” said Pardew. “Malaga were better than the other teams in terms of their technical levels.”
Fighting, sparked by West Ham United fans, overshadowed the football on Saturday.
Thankfully, the tournament ended on something of a high yesterday, and the talk was all of impressive youngster.
He was involved in Newcastle’s 18th-minute opener, racing up the left wing. The winger reached the byline and delivered a well-weighted cross for Riviere, who met it at the near post to make the breakthrough.
Newcastle had an organisation and discipline about them which had been lacking in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Malaga, and they kept the lead until the break..
The best was yet to come from Newcastle, who took a two-goal lead in the 54th minute.
Aarons broke up the left, and with nothing to aim for in the box, he launched cross-cum-shot which sailed over Fahrmann and into the far corner of the net.
Facunda Ferreyra came off the bench along with Cabella in the 57th minute, And he set up Cabella for his first Newcastle goal, the forward scoring with a low shot from just inside the box.
Avdijaj hit an injury-time reply.
