CHEIK Tiote today signed a new six and a half year contract Newcastle United.
And the move has ended speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future at St James’s Park.
Tiote has been a revelation since moving from FC Twente last summer, and the club had been braced for summer bids for the Ivory Coast international.
However, the 24-year-old – who scored a stunning equaliser for Newcastle on his last home appearance against Arsenal – has committed himself to the club until 2017 ahead of tomorrow’s game against Bolton Wanderers at St James’s Park.
“I’m very happy today to have signed this new deal with Newcastle United,” said Tiote.
“The experience of playing in the Premier League has been better than I ever hoped it could be.
“This is a great club, and the fans have been brilliant. I have never known support like it.”
Tiote was signed by Chris Hughton in an astute piece of business, and Pardew is grateful to have the powerful player signed up for the long-term.
Pardew said: “Cheik has been immense for us this season, and is exactly the type of player I want in my squad.
“He is fantastic on the pitch and in the changing room, and is vital for everything we want to achieve.
“Cheik offers us strength and presence in midfield, and has proved himself to be one of the best in his position in the Premier League.
“He’s adapted brilliantly to the English game and I’m delighted he’s signed a new deal with us today.”
Meanwhile, Pardew is hopeful Joey Barton’s contractual situation can be resolved.
Barton’s representative has been in talks with the club over a new deal, with the midfielder only contracted to the club for another 18 months.
“I hope it can be resolved between now and the end of the season – we want to keep our best players,” said Pardew. “But negotiations are never easy or straightforward.”
