Steve McClaren has leapt to the defence of “gutted” Aleksandar Mitrovic after his straight red in the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.
The Newcastle head coach said there was no “intent” and revealed the club is considering an appeal.
Andre Marriner gave the Serbian striker his marching orders after just 16 minutes at St James’s Park, after a studs up foul on Francis Coquelin’s shin.
He will now miss three matches.
McClaren said: “He is gutted about that.
“He is a young player and has to learn. He’s a good player but I know him well.
“There is no intent in anything he wants to do – he just wants to win the ball.
“He is a winner.
McClaren said the club is considering an appeal - but he wasn’t confident of winning it.
He added: “I hope I can.
“No doubt we will lose it.
“We want to and I have looked it over and over, you often get a lot of gauge on decisions from the players – and there was quite a few Arsenal players who seemed surprised.”
