ALAN Pardew says Newcastle United MUST invest in the New Year – or risk falling out of the Premier League’s top 10.

Manchester United comfortably beat Pardew’s side 3-1 at Old Trafford yesterday.

And the game underlined the team’s problems in defence and attack.

Newcastle were found wanting in defence, and up front – where Pardew paired Ayoze Perez and Adam Armstrong – where they struggled to carve out clearcut chances.

Pardew – whose side are 10th in the league table – reiterated his belief that the club needs to sign another striker in next month’s transfer window.

“I said in the summer we needed another striker, and I think it’s important we do need to bring another striker in,” said Pardew, whose side take on Everton at St James’s Park tomorrow.

“We need to score more goals.”

Newcastle’s pre-season aim was to better last season’s 10th-placed finish. But the club is in danger of dropping out of the top half of the table.

Pardew – who said after the game that he was without nine senior players through injury – feels the team needs to “stabilise” its position after three successive losses in the league and a Capital One Cup quarter-final defeat.

“I’m not going to criticise of my players,” he said. “I thought we were committed.

“This is a tough place to come. I thought the performance of some of my players was outstanding, Perez in particular.

“But I think we need to defend better. That was probably where we came unstuck. We’ve defended verry well this year, but we were a litle bit loose and we need to tighten up.

“We need to stabilise our position, and we need to get some players back.

“Nine senior players were not involved – that’s too many.

“I’ve had that for a goood two and a half months now.

“Maybe in January we need to get one or two in just to make sure we push on in the second half of the season.”
