AJAX have turned down Newcastle United’s bid for midfielder Vurnon Anita.
And the club will have to significantly up their offer – reportedly £4m – to land the Holland international.
Ajax are hopeful of keeping Anita, 23, at the Amsterdam ArenA for at least another season.
The Eredivisie club can offer versatile Anita, pictured right, who can also play at full-back, Champions League football next season.
And it would take a far larger bid to bring Ajax to the negotiating table.
Anita’s agent, Harry Lulofs, told the Dutch media that Newcastle’s bid wasn’t “irresistible”.
“I won’t reveal the amount of money offered,” said Lulofs.
“But I understand why Ajax have turned down this initial offer. It was not exactly irresistible.”
Ajax are understood to rate Anita – who was in Bert van Marwijk’s provisional Holland squad for Euro 2012 – in the £7-8m bracket.
However, Newcastle could opt to look elsewhere for reinforcements rather than up their bid.
The club has also lost out on one Ajax player this summer. Defender Jan Vertonghen is set to move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Newcastle’s only signing so far is midfielder Romain Amalfitano, who joined from Rennes last month.
H Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini admits his desire for European football means he has not ruled out a move to an “ambitious club”.
The Belgium midfielder, who signed a new long-term contract in November, has already been linked with Chelsea this summer but insists he is happy at Goodison Park.
“If I have got to go, I will go. If not, I repeat, I am at Everton,” Fellaini said. “I am ambitious; I want to play in the Champions League or in the Europa League.”
