Middlesbrough urged to sign Whitehead

MIDDLESBROUGH have been urged to reunite former Sunderland midfielders Dean Whitehead and Grant Leadbitter.

Whitehead is available on a free after the end of his Stoke contract, and Boro are known to be keen on landing the ex-Black Cats captain, who left Sunderland four years ago.

Former Boro defender Tony McMahon, now at Sheffield United, knows Whitehead and Leadbitter well, and he said: “Dean’s a hardworking central midfielder who has a good engine, he really covers a lot of ground.

“I’ve played against him and Grant when they were playing for Sunderland and I was with Boro, they were tough opponents.

“I remember thinking at the time Dean was a really good midfielder. He’s spent a lot of his career in the top flight and you don’t play that many Premier League games if you’re not a decent player.

“He’d be a great signing.”

H Manchester United have confirmed the departure of first team coach Rene Meulensteen.

The news had been widely expected following the exits of Mike Phelan and Eric Steele since David Moyes’ appointment as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor.

H SPL club Ross County are set to sign former Chelsea and Kilmarnock left-back Ben Gordon, adding to the captures of Dutch wingers Darren Maatsen and Melvin De Leeuw.
