TONY Mowbray is close to landing Middlesbrough’s first signing of the summer.
Defensive midfielder Jozsef Varga is expected to join Boro tomorrow on a season-long loan deal from Hungarian outfit Debrecen, subject him to passing a medical.
The 25-year-old is seen as the natural replacement for Nicky Bailey, who was surprisingly released at the end of the season.
Varga is something of a footballing nomad, having spent a large chunk of last season on loan at German team Greuther Furth.
“I played the last half of last season in Germany and I would like to play abroad again,” the shaven-headed middle man said.
“Fortunately my present club are supportive of me.”
Mowbray had been linked with a move for former Sunderland midfielder, Dean Whitehead, following his release by Stoke City in the summer.
But it remains to be seen whether the Boro boss will want to bring in both central players.
Boro returned to pre-season training today at Rockliffe Park.
