TWO Northern League sides are definitely through to the quarter finals of the FA Carlsberg Vase, but four-time winners Whitley Bay are not one of them.
In an eventful tie in front of 1,293 spectators at Hillheads, they were beaten by West Auckland Town.
The game was overshadowed by an injury to West’s Alex Francis, who had sustained a broken leg in the 15th minute.
The tie was held up for 40 minutes and the referee showed a red card to Whitley’s Lee Paul Scroggins.
With just a minute of normal time remaining, Mattie Moffat looked to have won the game for West, but Paul Robinson equalised in the 91st minute.
However, the drama was not over and six minutes into added time, Michael Rae booked his side’s place in the last eight.
Andrew Bulford and Stephen Shaw (2) struck in Dunston UTS’s comfortable win against Bethnal Green United, but Billingham Synthonia need to replay their tie at Bournemouth following a goalless draw.
Ashington went out in Gloucestershire to Shortwood United, who enjoyed a 3-0 victory after scoring twice in the first 12 minutes.
The draw for the quarter finals is: Peterborough Northern Star v Dunston UTS; Billingham Synthonia or Bournemouth v West Auckland Town.
