Wearside League: Slick West End hand out six of the best

The Wearsiders took a step forward in their bid to overtake the Seasiders’ three-point lead when they hit Annfield Plain for six at Ford Quarry last night.

Six players – Jordan Cook, Callum Hodgson, Grant Foster, Chris Thompson, Barry Turton and Keir0n Martin – all beat goalkeeper Tony Ridley, while the visitors failed to reply.

Murton were the latest team to feel the might of Stockton Town, who require only four points from their last six games to be crowned champions.

Five goals behind at the interval, Murton were never in the hunt as the Teessiders romped to a 9-1 victory.

Tony Johnson (3), Stephen Roberts, Sonni Coleman, Matthew Garbutt, Chris Dunwell, Chris Stockton and Mark Stonehouse were the marksmen.

Stockton have now racked up 151 goals, while bottom club Murton, whose only reply was credited to James Watson, have conceded 164 times.

It was a long journey home from Cleator Moor Celtic for Seaham Red Star Reserves, who suffered the ignominy of an 8-0 thrashing.

Leigh Dunn added to his impressive goal-scoring tally with five goals and Star goalkeeper Shaun Adamson was also beaten by Harvey Stainton, Callum Jackman and Adam Telfer.

While three games produced 24 goals, three were decided by one-goal margins.

Silksworth CW edged past Boldon CA with a superb 89th-minute effort from Mark Robinson, who flicked the ball over the head of his marker before producing a clinical finish into the bottom corner of the net.

Matthew Pennall’s 85th-minute strike proved sufficient for Spennymoor Town Reserves at Richmond Town, while a fine individual effort from Jack Young earned Harton and Westoe victory at Leam Rangers.

There was another close result at Hartlepool, where Prudhoe Town emerged victors by the odd goal in three.

They were gifted the two opening goals, scored by Sam Mannion, and it was only in the last minute that Alex Marshall found the net for Pool.
