PLAYER of the Year Craig Baxter and former Hartlepool striker James Brown are the first two Gateshead players to put pen to paper for next season.

Brown, who made 33 appearances in 2013/14, will undergo surgery on his ankle at the end of the month and has initially signed a short-term contract until the end of September with a view to a longer deal.

Baxter has signed a one-year contract after playing 45 games last season on his return to the club following a year at Bedlington Terriers.

The 27-year-old first joined Gateshead from hometown club Newcastle United in 2006 and has racked up 315 appearances for The Heed.

Gateshead, meanwhile, have confirmed a sixth pre-season friendly with a Sunderland X1 providing the opposition at the International Stadium on Saturday August 2nd.
