SUNDERLAND target Clint Dempsey has turned down a move to Aston Villa after they agreed a fee with Fulham.
The American, who is desperate for a move away from Craven Cottage, is thought to be holding out for a move to Liverpool.
Paul Lambert’s Villa submitted a bid of around £7million for the 29-year-old, but Dempsey did not want to entertain the idea of moving to Villa Park.
The Black Cats had been linked with a move for the forward, who scored 23 goals in 46 games for Fulham last season, but are yet to make a bid and it appears Liverpool are the frontrunners for his signature.
Brendan Rodgers’ side are also trying to sign Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge on loan after loaning out Andy Carroll and Jay Spearing to West Ham and Bolton respectively.
Liverpool are thought to be ready to make their move for Dempsey due to the imminent departure of Charlie Adam to Stoke, with the funds from the Scot’s sale set to be used to fund the deal for the American international.
