Beth Mead has scored for fun in Sunderland’s dream season in Women’s Super League 1.
But the WSL’s top goal-getter was left to rue the one that got away in the 1-1 draw at Birmingham City.
I know you can’t score them all, but by my standards I think I should have finished it.
The result kept the Lady Black Cats second in the table and still in contention for the title.
However, Mead was left to rue a missed opportunity 18 minutes from time at Solihull Motors ATG Stadium.
Sunderland had levelled nine minutes into the second half through Abbey Joice, who then superbly set up Mead for a tremendous chance .
Alas, the striker fired wide of the top-left corner of Becky Spencer’s goal.
“I should have scored,” she told the Echo. “I know you can’t score them all, but by my standards I think I should have finished it.”
The Blues keeper proved unbeatable, making three good saves from Mead (twice) and Holmes during a second-half Sunderland purple patch.
Mead said: “Becky’s been up there as one of the best keepers in England for a few years.
“She has kept Birmingham in the game with the saves she made.
“Our second half performance was better but the first half let us down.
“It was a positive that we were making the opportunities but it’s a shame that we could only put the one away.
“Unfortunately, it was one of those days when it didn’t seem to want to go in.”
Sunderland though are still in the hunt for the championship, even if they will be viewed as the outsiders.
They still have to play their rivals in the run-in, Arsenal (H), Man City (A) and favourites Chelsea (H).
“Luckily, results have gone in our favour with Man City being held to a draw by Notts County,” said Mead.
“It would have been nice to have got the three points and got a little bit clear of Man City.
“But it is what it is and we’ve just got to keep grafting for our last three games.
“We’re still in contention, we have all the three teams around us still to play.
“We need to play our best and try to get results in those games.
“Teams are taking points off each other, so we’ve got to stay positive.
“We’ve exceded expectations as a team, but we still want more.”
