SUNDERLAND Ladies hook off any final day nerves to seal the FA Women’s Super League 2 title with a commanding 4-0 victory over Millwall Lionesses at the Den today.
The Lady Black Cats travelled to London to face Millwall Lionesses two points clear of Doncaster Rovers Belles, who won 9-0 today, at the top of the table knowing any slip up would be pounced upon.
But they took the lead when Kelly McDougall curled in the opener from 20 yards out on 17 minutes.
The Belles were running riot elsewhere in the capital, but the champions elect controlled the rest of the half without ever really troubling Sarah Quantrill in the Millwall net.
They continued to dominate in the second half and could have gone ahead early on after Rachel Furness struck the crossbar from 35 yards out.
Furness eventually got her goal, rising at the back post with a powerful header to extend Sunderland’s lead after 63 minutes.
Sunderland continued to dominate and, two minutes later, were further ahead through a Keira Ramshaw volley, before Abbey Joice added another soon after breaking into the box.
Mick Mulhern’s team finished the season with 15 wins from 18 league games and have won promotion to FA WSL 1, subject to meeting off-field licensing requirements.
