SPENNYMOOR Town last night clinched the STL Northern League championship when they defeated arch-rivals Dunston UTS by an only goal at The Brewery field.
Had the sides drawn, then West Auckland Town would have lifted the title – while victory for Dunston would have kept them in contention.
But it was Moors who celebrated a third consecutive championship when Stephen Richardson scored the only goal in the 19th minute. He met a long ball out of defence and headed past UTS goalkeeper Liam Connell.
Just before the interval Moor’s keeper Robert Dean made outstanding saves to deny Andy Bulford and Terry Galbraith and in the second half, Connell kept his team in the game, saving from Gavin Cogden and Stephen Richardson.
Just before the end though, it was Dean who made the save of the night from Michael Dixon and Moors held on during the final nerve-tingling minutes.
Spennymoor have also won the Durham Challenge Cup and the Cleator Cup and on Saturday play Team Northumbria for a place in the Final of the Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup.
