RYHOPE CW extended their lead at the top of the Wearside League table to five points when they eased past third-top Cleator Moor Celtic 3-0 last night.
Neither side gave much away, but the Wearsiders managed a breakthrough on 42 minutes with a spectacular goal from Chris Winn, whose shot from 30 yards swerved past visiting goalkeeper Tom Sharp.
Jack Pounder doubled the lead after 69 minutes with an equally spectacular goal, his 25-yard free-kick giving Sharp no chance.
It was all over for the Cumbrians five minutes later as Winn got the ball in his own half and ran at the visitors’ defence before setting up James Cook, who slotted home.
Second-top Stockton Town have a game in hand on the Wearsiders.
One promotion place is up for grabs, and Ryhope are confident they will have their ground up to scratch for the Northern League by tomorrow – ahead of the deadline for ground inspections. A stand is set to be in place to satisfy the Northern League.
Silksworth CW had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Annfield Plain despite making a dream start when Michael Brunning drove past Brian Wood in the first minute.
In first-half stoppage-time, Silksworth keeper Joe Clayton parried a shot, but Callum Monroe netted the rebound. In the first minute of the second period, Monroe notched again to put Annfield ahead.
Silksworth were awarded a 76th-minute penalty, but Plain goalkeeper Wood saved from Ashley Davis. Yet, from the resultant corner, Michael McVay volleyed the ball into the top corner of the net from well outside the penalty area to level matters.
Boldon CA became the first side to concede 100 goals when they leaked six to visitors Wolviston.
Danny Earl bagged a brace, with James Rowe, Shaun Gregory, David Johnson and a Scott Smith own goal making it 6-0.
Fourth-top Redcar Athletic were held to a goalless draw by lowly visitors Prudhoe Town.
