DURHAM City were left to curse missed chances as they failed to halt Skelmersdale United’s promotion challenge from the Evo-Stik League Division One North.
City had countless chances to score, but when they went down to 10 men on 77 minutes, the home side took advantage and scored twice.
City might easily have taken the lead after just nine minutes. Stephen Thompson sent Elliott Cutts through on goal, but goalkeeper Tom Brocklehurst, named as Man of the Match, made the first of several saves.
At the other end, James Winter denied Dave Roberts and Ryan Wade.
Durham should really have made two gilt-edged chances count.
Thompson split the home defence with a beautiful pass to Cutts, but he blasted over the crossbar and a minute later Jack Pounder should have buried his shot.
The turning point came 13 minutes from the end when substitute Dan Parker was red-carded when deemed to be the last defender.
Eventually, being a man short took its toll on City and nine minutes from the end Dave Roberts headed home.
In the last minute Lewis Field ended City’s hopes.
