SUPER LEAGUE champions Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners in their friendly against Sunderland at Eppleton CW yesterday.
A bright opening saw Brogan McHugh fire narrowly over for Sunderland following good work from Rebekah Bass.
At the other end, keeper Helen Alderson had to be alert to tip over from a Gemma Davidson effort.
Liverpool took the lead in the 19th minute when Nicola Rossler latched on to a loose ball and crossed for England striker Natasha Dowie to fire home at the far post.
The visitors extended their lead just before the break when American Amanda Da Costa finished off a fine move between Katrin Omarsdottir and Dowie.
Liverpool, playing their first firendly of pre-season, made full use of their squad as they made seven second half substitutions.
Sunderland came more into the game and were unlucky not to score when Bass’s shot rebounded off the underside of the bar.
Gemma Wilson and Beth Mead were just wide with efforts, while Rachel Furness had a volley pushed away by keeper Danielle Gibbons.
Sunderland: Alderson (Laws), Beer, Bannon, Wilson, Greenwell, McHugh (Holmes), McDougall, Furness, Joice, Bass, Mead.
