IT was a good day for the Ebac Northern League in the third round of the FA Carlsberg Vase on Saturday.
The three sides who lined up against opponents from other leagues all won, meaning there are seven teams in today’s draw, including Whickham whose tie at Yorkshire outfit Brighouse Town was postponed.
Holders Spennymoor Town won more comfortably than the 2-0 scoreline against Bridlington Town suggests.
A crowd of 440 at the Brewery Field saw them dominate for long periods, but a mixture of poor finishing and the woodwork restricted them to goals by Gavin Cogdon and Liam Henderson.
A single strike by captain Andrew Johnson proved sufficient for Ashington at home to Thackley, and Morpeth Town again belied their lowly position in the league when they won at Staveley Miners Welfare, thanks to two goals in the last 10 minutes from Michael Chilton and Stephen Forster.
There were three all-ENL ties. A bumper attendance of 542 at Whitley Bay saw Dunston UTS edge victory with strikes by Brad Brooking (own goal) and Lee McAndrew.
West Auckland came from behind to see off Billingham Synthonia 2-1.
Michael Sweet had Synners ahead, but, after Lewis Galpin levelled, Robbie Briggs fired home the winner.
Paul Brayson and Billy Ions had Newcastle Benfield two goals ahead at Jarrow Roofing, who were thrown a late lifeline by Dan Kirkup on 81 minutes.
Roofing pushed players forward in search of an equaliser, but Benfield held on during the frenetic later stages.
Whickham travel to Brighouse Town tomorrow night when they will make a second attempt to play their tie.
