James Fairley made an instant impact for new club Durham City on Saturday.

The summer signing from fellow Northern League club Washington fired the only goal as Ian Chandler’s side beat EvoStik League outfit Darlington 1883 1-0 in their opening friendly.

Fairley, a regular marksman in Washington’s promotion success last term, latched onto a through ball to beat keeper Peter Jameson.

Darlo, who had all five summer signings absent and missed three other regulars, including ex-Sunderland striker David Dowson, next meet Sunderland at Bishop Auckland on Thursday.

City host Jarrow tomorrow night (7.30pm).

Whitley Bay won 1-0 at Scottish club Dalbeattie Star, thanks to a Chris Goss strike, but also lost 3-0 to Annan Athletic yesterday.

Tow Law romped to a 5-1 win over Richmond Town.
