FORMER Sunderland Women players Steph Houghton and Jordan Nobbs both scored as England opened up their Cyprus Cup campaign with a 4-2 win over Italy yesterday.
Nobbs, who left the Lady Black Cats two summers ago to join up with Houghton at Arsenal, was making her senior international debut and fired England ahead after just seven minutes with a sweet strike into the top corner from 20 yards.
Italy responded well and two quick goals gave them the lead before left-back Houghton brought England level with a header from Rachel Yankey’s in-swinging corner.
The goals continued to flow as Jess Clarke scored with a deflected shot to put England 3-2 up.
Houghton almost scored a second after the break but fired over the bar. England did score a fourth, though, when sub Ellen White slotted home well on 83 minutes.
Wearsider Jill Scott went on as a substitute in the second half, and could regain a starting berth in tomorrow’s game against Scotland.
H To celebrate International Womens’ Day, Sunderland Women are taking over the @SAFCOfficial Twitter account for a Q&A session tomorrow.
England U19 striker Beth Mead will be joined by defender Becky Salicki to answer questions from supporters.
The players helped win a league and cup double last year, and they are still on course to repeat the feat this season.
Questions can be tweeted using the hashtag #SWFC between 1 and 2pm tomorrow.
