Sunderland West End’s hopes of a giant-killing act in Saturday’s Durham Challenge Cup tie against Gateshead Reserves, evaporated on the stroke of half-time on Saturday.

Until then, Anth Nelson’s side trailed by a single goal, scored in the 12th minute by Mesh Kanda, but, on 45 minutes, Mattie McCarthy doubled the lead.

From then on, the Wearsiders were under the cosh and the Tynesiders romped to a 6-0 victory with further strikes from Joe Hughes (2), Josh Curry and Scott McArdle.

Wolviston were also very much the underdogs at home to Northern League First Division side Consett, who ran out comfortable 3-0 winners courtesy of Luke Sullivan, Michael Sweet and Michael Mackay.
