Bishop Auckland succumbed to a shock FA Vase second qualifying round defeat at home to Northern League rivals Billingham Town last night.
Bishops, fresh from knocking Evo-Stik League side Trafford out of the FA Cup, even had the benefit of a second-minute lead against their Second Division visitors.
An Andrew Johnson pass split the defence and found Jeff Smith, who rifled home from inside the box, giving goalkeeper Thomas Dawson no chance.
In the second half, Town roused themselves and, in the 48th minute, Luke Hogan forced the ball home past keeper Edward Wilczynski from close range, following a goalmouth scramble.
Bishops had strong penalty claims turned down before Town’s Steven Oakley received his marching orders for his second yellow card offence on the hour mark, following a bad foul on Stuart Thompson, but only five minutes later the visitors took the lead.
Craig Hutchinson received a long through pass and beat two defenders before firing past Wilczynski to seal a surprise victory.
