FA CARLSBERG Vase winners Spennymoor Town failed to complete a quickfire double when they lost 2-1 to Bishop Auckland in last night’s Durham Challenge Cup final at Eppleton CW.
Ryan Cummings opened the scoring for fired-up Bishops in the 10th minute, driving past Moors goalkeeper Robert Dean after being set up by Keiran Megran.
Jason Ainsley’s side levelled when Michael Rae pounced after Peter Jeffries parried Stephen Richardson’s shot.
Megran headed against the woodwork on 70 minutes then, five minutes from time, Cummings was stretchered off with a knee injury.
In added time, Bishops clinched victory as Megran opened up the opportunity for Jamie Harwood, who struck from a tight angle.
In the Ebac Northern League First Division, Ashington are in with a chance of a top-six finish after crushing Norton 5-0, thanks to Gareth Bainbridge (3), Matthew Grieve and Lee Scott.
Whitley Bay ended third following a 3-1 defeat of Shildon. James Fairley, Craig McFarlane and David Pounder notched, Ben Wood replying.
