STEPH Houghton’s first game as the permanent England Women’s captain ended in a thumping 9-0 win over Montenegro this afternoon.
The Wearsider, handed the armband yesterday, could hardly have asked for an easier game against weak opposition in the World Cup qualifier at Brighton.
The game had a huge Wearside influence with central midfielder Jill Scott on the scoresheet, as well as former Sunderland winger Demi Stokes with her first senior England goal.
Three of the England back four were former Sunderland players, with Houghton paired with Lucy Bronze in central defence, and Stokes in the left-back role.
Liverpool’s Toni Duggan hit a hat-trick with other goals coming from Eniola Aluko, Karen Carney, Lianne Sanderson and Natasha Dowie.
