BISHOP Auckland were surprisingly defeated at Second Division Whickham in the first round of the Durham Challenge Cup last night.
Stephen Aiston scored the only goal, turning his marker before firing past goalkeeper Scott Pocklington into the top corner of the net.
An only goal by Lee Whitworth proved sufficient for Willington at home to Billingham Town, firing left-footed past keeper Corey Smith, and despite scoring first through Christian Selby, Wearside League side Wolviston succumbed 3-1 to Norton and Stockton Ancients, whose matchwinners were Nicky Martin, with a brace and Gary Mitchell.
* In the only Ebac Northern League game, improving Newton Aycliffe eased their relegation fears with a 2-1 victory at West Allotment Celtic who remain fifth-bottom in Division One.
The Tynesiders led through Sean Reid from the 17th minute before two goals in as many minutes from Liam Henderson and Jack Bogie, early in the second half, earned Aycliffe three crucial points.
