SUNDERLAND Primary Schools Boys missed out in the North of England seven-a-side Championships despite conceding just one goal in five matches at the Academy of Light.
The Wearsiders began with consecutive goalless draws against Leeds and Blackburn, before Stephen Black’s goal proved decisive in securing all three points in a hard-fought 1-0 success against South Northumberland..
Black then gave Sunderland the lead against York and qualification for the semi-finals looked certain entering the dying seconds, but York equalised with a deflected free-kick with the very last kick to guarantee their progress.
That left Sunderland needing to beat table-topping Sheffield in the final group game to go through. But a third 0-0 draw was not enough, with Sheffield and York finishing as the top two and Sunderland just out of luck in third.
