NIGEL Clough has taken the unusual step of naming his Sheffield United side the day before they kick-off against Hartlepool United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Pools, who received a bye in the first round, take on League One Blades in the second round of the competition at Victoria Park on Tuesday night (KO 7pm) and Clough has already confirmed his starting line-up.

Clough has made wholesale changes - changing all 11 starters from their 3-2 defeat at Chesterfield on Saturday - but it remains a strong side heading to the North East.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the match, Clough said he had made the decision “so our fans making the long trip know who’s involved.”

Player coach Sam Collins and goalkeeping coach Stephen Pears will be in the dugout for the match at The Vic following the resignation of Colin Cooper.

The pair, acting as caretaker bosses, are set to be without winger Jack Compton and defender Stuart Parnaby who are both still struggling with knee injuries for the game with the Blades.

Meanwhile, on-loan Middlesbrough utility man David Atkinson is still with his parent club for treatment on a hamstring injury.

The match will also see the debut of the vanishing spray at Victoria Park, it is not being used in the Football League this season but is in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Sheffield United: Turner, Davies, Basham, McGahey, Harris, Campbell-Ryce, Reed, McGinn, De Girolamo, Porter, Baxter.

Subs: Doyle, Willis, Collins, McNulty, Murphy.
